About the Expert
Dr. Douglas Murphy, a longtime proponent of minimally invasive cardiac surgery, is one of the most experienced robotic heart surgeons in the world. He has performed more than 900 intracardiac robotic procedures, including more than 650 mitral valve repairs.
In 2007, Dr. Murphy served as Chairman of the Saint Joseph’s Heart and Vascular Institute. He has been a cardiac surgeon at Saint Joseph’s Hospital in Atlanta for more than 20 years and has been chief of cardiothoracic surgery for the last 10 years.
For the last six years, Dr. Murphy has focused his career on endoscopic intracardiac surgery using robotic instrumentation. He remains active in performing, researching, and teaching robotic heart surgery.
He served as principal investigator in 2002 for the Intuitive da Vinci® Surgical System technology, leading one of the first U.S. cardiac surgery teams in clinical trials for atrialseptal defect repair and coronary bypasses prior to FDA approval. Because of his achievements, St. Joseph’s was named the exclusive southeastern training center for the da Vinci® Surgical System in 2004. Since then, Saint Joseph’s has continued to expand its program to include thoracic, urologic, gynecologic and general surgery procedures.
Dr. Murphy is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He completed residencies in internal medicine and general surgery at the Massachusetts General Hospital before completing his cardiac surgery fellowship at Emory University, where he served on the staff for four years.
